ERP System of the Future: Database, Business Logic and Interface

Writen by Andrew Karasev

We will base our prognosis on our Microsoft Business Solutions ERP consulting practice: Microsoft Great Plains, Navision, Axapta, MS CRM. Also we’ve analyzed Oracle products: Oracle Financials, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, and IBM Lotus Notes Domino. The trends could be seen in both: so-called functional consulting, dealing with overall system implementation and user training and customization – customization tools, open vs. proprietary technologies, etc. Our ideas are addressed to large corporate business IT departments, because in our opinion these professionals are under the highest pressure to foresee the future and make proper selection decision today.

No more new ERPs. The best time to launch software development company with the aim to create new ERP was 1980th. Those days we saw the dominance of Hardware & OS (UNIX, Solaris, DOS, Mac OS). Each platform was selfish and usually non-compatible with the others (somebody may point out to EDI interfaces – yes, this was probably the only way of making different platforms talk to each other)

Existing ERP transformation. Consider Project Green from Microsoft for example. The plan is to introduce standard business suites: Microsoft Financials, Microsoft Logistics, Microsoft Manufacturing, Microsoft Human Resources, etc. Currently Microsoft owns several ERPs: Great Plains, Navision, Axapta, Solomon. If it succeeds in integrating the best pieces of each application under one recognizable and intuitive interface – the goal would be reached. Microsoft already got substantial success moving all its ERPs on one DB platform – Microsoft SQL Server

Java vs. Windows. We don’t think that you have to worry about OS platform anymore. XML is excellent mediator and it will make it possible to allow each platform to concentrate in its business niche.

Database & Business Logic should stay. Yes – why would we need to reinvent double entry – the fundamentals of General Ledger accounting, invented by Luca Pacioli in 16th century? Well – the dilemma of large business is in its uniqueness. In our opinion it will be resolved by simplification of the ERP customization

Interface. This is where you should expect the fight. Forbes Magazine predicts that future employees in your accounting & AR departments will come from nowadays computer gamers and for gamers intuitiveness of the interface is everything. We agree – the nicest features of user friendly ERP interface could be easily outsourced to offshore software development companies in India, China, Philippines, Russia

AJAX: Just Like Fast Food

Writen by Lucky Balaraman

There are some fast food outlets that start cooking food only after you walk up to the counter and order it. Make no mistake, these are the inefficient outlets. You end up waiting half an hour for your meal to appear and vow never to go the restaurant again because of the time it made you waste.

Switch to a well-organized fast-food outlet. Popular menu items are already waiting for you in the brightly lit ‘keep warm’ showcase. You walk up to the counter, order a burger with fries, the salesperson goes to the showcase, takes out a warm, packaged burger, takes out fries and gives them all to you in a jiffy.

AJAX is a strategy for giving you web pages in a jiffy. I can’t but help thinking that Jesse James Garrett, credited with being the brain behind AJAX, spent a lot of time at the best fast food outlets. Why? Because the AJAX strategy is uncannily similar to that used in a quality fast food establishment.

Let’s think for a moment about how your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, whatever) fetches a web page for you. You type the URL for the page into your browser. Your browser sends a request to a computer on the internet (the ’server’ at that URL) to send that page back. The server pulls the page out from its store of pages and sends it to your browser, which displays the page on your screen.

Usually you do not have to wait more than 15 seconds for the page to reach your browser and be displayed on your screen.

But sometimes it can take a whole half minute (which is the same as ‘forever’ in Internet terms) to see your page. Usually this occurs in a situation where you have entered some data in a web page, sent it down the Internet to a server, and are expecting the server to process your data and send you back a result (an example is attempting to fetch images from certain online photo sharing sites).

But suppose your desktop had a program in it which anticipated what your next request could be, got that information ahead of time from the server, and kept it ready for your browser. When you did make the request, the information you wanted would be readily available in your desktop. You would not have to wait for it to be fetched from the server; the program gives it to your browser and it is displayed immediately.

Now think of the ‘keep warm’ showcase strategy in the fast food restaurant. You see the similarity in concepts?

So here’s the thing: the program in your desktop that anticipates your next move and ‘pre-fetches’ data from the server is called an ‘AJAX Engine’. It is written in the JavaScript programming language.

When it pre-fetches data from the server, it uses a programming language called XML.

The pre-fetching does not occur as a result of your request for a page. It happens at other times, perhaps while you are sitting back and viewing the last page that was sent. The pre-fetching is thus not synchronized with your requests for pages. This is known technically as asynchronous pre-fetching.

Hence the name Asynchronous JavaScript And XML, AJAX for short. And guess what, Google Groups, Google Suggest, and Google Maps are all implemented with AJAX.

It is likely that AJAX is going to show up more frequently in the design of interactive websites in the coming years. Now you do not have to wonder what it is!

One article is far too short to describe all the complexities of Photoshop – whole books have been written that barely scratch the surface. If you want to learn more, the best thing to do is to find some good Photoshop tutorial websites, and work from there. Here’s a selection of some of the best.

First off, there’s Adobe’s own Photoshop tips website, which you can find at adobe.com/products/tips/photoshop. The selection of tutorials here is not that wide, however, and the writing style can often be a little dry.

A good resource for basic, starter tutorials is psworkshop.net. While the site lacks more advanced material, it has quite in-depth explanations of each tool and what it can do.

For fans of About.com, you can find material on Photoshop at graphicssoft.about.com and graphicdesign.about.com. The advantage of about.com is that all the material on a particular sub-site is written by the same expert (they call them About.com Guides), giving it a consistent tone and quality.

If you want new tutorials all the time, good-tutorials.com is a good place to go, with hundreds of Photoshop tutorials being added every day. They are well-categorised and easily searchable. Once you get good enough, you can even submit tutorials here yourself, and other members will vote on them – the ones with the most votes get featured on the main page.

A good way to find links to the very best tutorials out there on the web is to use Google and tell it exactly what you want, but that doesn’t always turn up any results. Another option that is rapidly becoming more popular is to use link-tagging services such as Yahoo!’s del.icio.us. Going to del.icio.us/popular/photoshop will show you which links are currently the most popular across the whole web for photoshop. It works for anything else, too – just replace the word Photoshop with whatever you’re looking for.

Microsoft Great Plains POP: Purchase Order Processing – Overview For Consultants

Writen by Vincent Ong

Great Plains Purchase Order Processing (POP) module makes up one-third of the core Great Plains Inventory and Order Processing group (the other two being Inventory Management and Sales Order Processing). POP seamlessly integrates with other Great Plains modules (GL, PM, FA, SOP, etc.) allowing for a tightly-knit information system. Gone are the days when invoices from purchases have to be asked from other departments. Great Plains POP module empowers its users by allowing access to mission-critical information including audit control and purchase activity analysis (with proper security permission, of course).

Great Plains prides itself of being able to empower its users in streamlining business processes by being in control. It also improves accuracy and increases employee productivity by automating routine purchasing tasks. POP lets you establish long term contracts using blanket purchase orders to record and track extended purchases, giving you greater negotiating power with your vendors and simplifying contract purchase processes. The latest versions include capabilities to accurately record and track landed costs as well as auto-generation of purchase orders.

Features:

Multiple Ship-To Addresses – Enter a ship-to address for each line item on a purchase order, reducing documentation for items shipped to multiple addresses.

Mapping – Map purchase order line numbers to line items, automatically, to expedite purchase orders.

Alerts- Establish alerts that prevent employees from issuing invalid purchase orders.

Flexible Control of Processes – Control purchasing processes with cost variance tracking, easy transfer of information, receiving/invoicing against multiple purchase orders, comprehensive receipt information, posting, and 1099 reporting.

Line-Item Level Visibility – Manage purchase orders at the line-item level with automated roll-up of similar items, free on-board (FOB) designation, individual line item release to vendor dates, and multi-site delivery.

Purchase Order Tracking – Get instant answers with complete tracking of open or historical purchase order and receiving documents by order number, item number, or date.

Audit Control- Maintain audit control with cancelled item tracking, line-item ordering and status information, document revision tracking, and customized landed cost definition.

Multi-Currency Transactions – Enter, track, and report multicurrency transactions in the originating or functional currency, translated using exchange rate tables, with special functionality for European Union customers.

Drop Shipment – Drop-ship orders directly from supplier to customer and bypass the typical inventory update process.

Reports – Analyze purchase activity with Purchase Order Status, Invoice Cost Variance, and posting reports. Integrate with Microsoft Great Plains modules such as Crystal Reports for further report flexibility and power.

Requisition Management for Microsoft Business Portal – Eliminate paper-based requisitions by creating requisitions via a Web browser, with automatic approval routing and e-mail notification. View purchase requisitions in process as they route from employees to supervisors and purchasing, with customized tracking and validation of commitments against budgets.

PO Generator – Automate purchasing through order point or min/max settings. PO Generator determines quantities needed based on the stock situation in relation to the stock goals and generates a suggested purchase order that can be reviewed and edited prior to release. Also, automatically create purchase orders in response to quantity shortages on customer orders and manage these documents from within POP.

Computerized Accounting for Your Company

Writen by Gijo George

Accounting is the core of any business. Each and every transaction that takes place within your organization has to be recorded properly. Without a proper Accounting system, no business can survive in this data oriented world. Accounts data helps to analyze the financial position of the organization, and plan well for future activities. It helps its investors to understand more about the company’s financial objectives.

Accounting is based on some standards and these are known Accounting Standards. Every Organization must adhere to these Accounting Standards. If one organization fails to adhere to these well-defined Accounting Standards, then it will result in complete chaos within the organization and will spoil the reputation of the company.

With the arrival of Computerized Accounting Software, adhering to Accounting Standards has become easy. Accounting Software is built upon Accounting Standards and this makes all the entries made to it follow these standards to some extent. But due care has to be taken while entering transactions, as wrong Account Heads selected can again make problems. In Accounting software, each Account Head is defined under different main groups. When you define these Account Heads proper care has to be taken to ensure that these Account Heads falls under the right group. If this is not the case, then your financial results will show unexpected losses or profits, which is far beyond the reality.

For more details related to selecting an Accounting software please visit http://www.giftsspace.com/accountingsoftwareselection.html

Firefox: Benefit Analysis versus Internet Explorer

Writen by Matt Bacak

Most of Firefox’s advantages are MSIE’s disadvantages, and vice-versa. This article will look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of Firefox in relation to MSIE.

Advantages

Security

Security is often cited as the primary reason for users switching from MSIE to Firefox. Security is of utmost importance for software that interacts with remote computers, in an era of high security risk activities such as online banking.

Firefox has fewer security holes and a tighter schedule of disclosing them. The enhanced security in Firefox is due to a multitude of factors the system’s inclusion of more source code reviewers and a better bug reporting system and exclusion of VBScript/ActiveX, often the source of vulnerabilities.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has been clamoring for years to try to clamp down on the MSIE security holes. It acquired an anti-spyware product, which it released under the banner of Microsoft AntiSpyware. It also promises its new Windows Vista platform will be more secure. However, Microsoft’s track record to date has done little to boost the confidence of today’s user. Standards compliance

Firefox has vaulted ahead of MSIE with improved support for standard web protocols, such as its superior stylesheet compatibility.

Since MSIE had a leading marketshare, the company had less interest in conforming to web standards, and instead focused on proprietary protocols, with the goal of maintaining their market position. That is, the focus of Microsoft was to try to convert as much of its userbase to writing webpages and web applications that required a proprietary MSIE-approach, so that down the road, users would be less able to move off a Microsoft platform. As a result, Microsoft neglected for years to improve support for basic open standards. For example, transparent PNG graphics did not work all the way through to MSIE version 6.

Multiple operating system platforms

Firefox is available for users who runs Windows (Windows 98 through to Windows XP), Mac OS X, all the leading versions of Linux, as well as some lesser-used operating systems. In comparison, Microsoft has dropped development for Mac, and other non-Windows systems. Furthermore, Microsoft has ceased new development even on their own versions of Windows, making the new MSIE only available to users who have a license for Windows XP. Firefox also has a similar user interface among the different operating platforms. For deployments that have a mix of operating platforms (such as Linux for the techs, Macs for the graphic designers, and Windows for the accounts department), moving to Firefox for everyone thus brings technical support costs down.

Time-saving browser innovations

Internet communication and interaction is a core component for most modern businesses. Efficient use of web browser time translates to increased profits, so innovations to help workers do their tasks faster are welcomed. Firefox leads MSIE in this regard, with out-of-the-box features such as integrated Google search in the toolbar, placing the find-within-page box at the bottom of the browser window so as not to obscure the text, and so on.

Disadvantages

Retraining

Any switch of software incurs a retraining cost. However, a switch from MSIE to Firefox requires only a mild amount of retraining.

The switch from MSIE to Firefox is designed to be easy, with proper import of bookmarks and other settings.

Browser interfaces are becoming standard, so understanding how to get up and running is not usually a problem. There are some only minor adjustments. For example, “Internet Files” in MSIE is called “Cache” in Firefox. One can use a downloaded MSIE theme so that the Firefox user interface even more closely resembles that of MSIE.

Incomplete migration

In a business with Windows computers, if the switch from MSIE to Firefox is incomplete, it can cost more to offer technical support for both browsers. This argument would only apply to shops whose Windows computers are all Windows XP. Since the new MSIE is only available for Windows XP, if there are different Windows versions (such as Windows NT or 2000), then the technical support team already needs to support different types of MSIE browsers.

Another consideration, however, is that even an incomplete switch from MSIE to Firefox could result in less technical support, since the Firefox users would be less likely to need help with fixing their computer after an MSIE-related security breach.

Internet Explorer 7 Hits The Mean Streets

It didn’t take long after Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7 for download for the exploits and vulnerabilities to appear, with many reporters and security companies scrambling over each other in order to publish about the new Internet Explorer flaw.

Only, it wasn’t.

Argument and counter-argument ensued, with Microsoft quickly defending the issue as being an Outlook Express issue and not an Internet Explorer flaw. That sleight of hand didn’t satisfy many, who pointed out that the same flaw had been identified back in April, when it was attributed to Internet Explorer 6. At the end of the day, Internet Explorer 7 is a possible vector to exploit an error in the handling of ‘mhtml:’ addresses – which can result in the disclosure of sensitive information.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only issue to have affected Internet Explorer 7, with earlier beta versions susceptible to the WMF vulnerabilities that were identified and patched over the 2005 – 2006 Christmas / New Year period. The unknown issues with Internet Explorer 7 are going to be a greater concern over coming months, as Microsoft is expected to use Automatic Update to provide the application to Windows XP SP2 users in November.

A positive aspect is that many computer users will get to experience the improved CSS handling, improved security, tabbed browsing, and the other general improvements that Internet Explorer 7 brings to the system.

Every Dog Barks At The Moon Sometimes

Over the last couple of weeks, many security ‘experts’ and companies (including some of the biggest, most ‘respected’ names) have been busy displaying an amazing amount of hubris and arrogance in their coverage of what would normally be regarded as minor news items.

After Apple Computer disclosed that an unknown, but believed to be very small, number of iPods were shipped with some Windows malware preinstalled (claims range from virus to adware), there was an almost unanimous hammering of the company’s claims. By Windows and Microsoft supporters (such as top Information Security companies and people). Almost all of the vitriol was focussed around the “we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.” statement, which appeared on Apple’s site (http://www.apple.com/support/windowsvirus/) in relation to the issue.

Many called Apple ‘arrogant’, and attacked any perceived ills that they might have had with the company. Unfortunately, in their rush to attack Apple, most completely bypassed (or were unaware of) a broader incident that affected a joint promotion being run by McDonald’s and Coca-Cola in Japan, where 10,000 media players were distributed. Only, the players were infected with password stealing malware.

Elsewhere, an unnamed expert, who crusades against hysteria and false claims in security (and, more frequently, terrorism), fell into their own trap recently. They claimed that firefighters who treated jelly (the gelatinous dessert) as a potential HAZMAT threat (before it had been identified) were over-reacting to it as a terror risk. While it does sound funny that firefighters would be running around in HAZMAT suits trying to deal with somebody’s unwanted dessert, it is a fairly standard practice when emergency services are faced with unknown substances that have been abandoned.

Perhaps it is my background in aviation and engineering related fields, but nothing is done without a healthy factor of safety (risk management), and the initial response was completely appropriate. People have died because they didn’t know enough about the material that they were handling (Goi

Writen by Peter Emerson

Having selected the most suitable persons for the various categories of jobs in the enterprise through the application of recruitment techniques, it becomes necessary to arrange for their training. And that’s where the role of recruiting software comes in.

While education improves the knowledge and understanding of employees in a general way, training aims at increasing the aptitudes, skills and abilities of the workers to perform specific jobs. With increased chances of a new worker doing well at his job, the systematic methods of vocational guidance and selection are extended to their logical conclusion.

A person, however capable and competent, cannot do his best at a job unless he is systematically trained in the current methods of work. The advantages of a training program are obviously enormous. In the first place, training brings about an improvement of the quality and quantity of output by increasing the skill of the employees. A novice, who has just started working without proper training, will normally produce less than another person who has been systematically trained. In fact, the quality of work done by him may not be up to the mark for lack of proper training.

Secondly, trained personnel will be able to make much better and more economical use of materials and equipment then untrained employees, thus reducing the cost of production. In addition, since trained personnel will commit very few mistakes, the management can well afford to focus its attention on planning the work and encourage expert workers.

Finally, training will create a feeling among the workers that they are being properly cared for, and that the employer is sincere to them. This will improve relations between the employers and employees. If, on the contrary, the workers are not fully trained in the correct methods of work, unwholesome developments may follow. The level of output and the quality of work may be poor.

EDI Services

Writen by Richard Romando

EDI (electronic data interchange) systems enable companies to exchange documents pertaining to business transactions through computer networks. Apart from achieving fast document transfers, this system reduces administrative costs and errors associated with business transactions. Implementing EDI requires immense expertise and resources, which may prove expensive. Third-party firms specializing in EDI services offer a cost effective solution to this problem. EDI service companies provide the necessary hardware and software support at a low cost. They handle the transfer of documents in a very efficient manner. Moreover, these companies offer the flexibility of changing the implementation plan as required.

EDI service companies manage all the tasks related to EDI systems, ranging from the implementation to the monitoring of the system. The core of the EDI services is the document conversion process. In order to transfer a document from one company to another, it must be converted into a form which the EDI system can recognize. Once this conversion is done, the communication component of the system handles the transfer. A quality EDI system handles the conversion process automatically. This eliminates the need for a data entry operator. Other components of EDI services include automatic notifications of new document arrivals and issuing of alerts in case of emergency.

EDI services were traditionally handled by a private network. They are now being offered on the Internet owing to the low cost of operation. XML has emerged as a standard file format for exchanging data over the Internet and has been adopted in many EDI systems. EDI services help t companies save time and money required for business transactions. The automatic conversion of data and error detection increase the speed of business order processing. The adoption of EDI services enables the company to attract more customers owing to the emerging trends in ecommerce.

Why Stick With Email Clients Like Outlook?

Writen by Iulia Pascanu

Trying to figure out a stream in banning one email client or another is no easy job. As soon as somebody rises up saying Outlook is bad, somebody else comes saying it’s good and the other one is bad. And the story goes on and on.

On one hand, email clients like Outlook Express and (even more) MS Outlook do a really good job when it comes to user friendliness. What email client allows you to use more options on the agenda, bell ringers, flag wavers and contact managing tips than MS Outlook?

The ease of use perfectly molds on human indolence. That means I would never question about Microsoft Outlook being or not a good email client if it comes together with my Office pack that comes together with Windows that comes together with my computer.

Here is another red flag: MS Outlook is not free as long as I’m paying for my Windows license. This should count when choosing an email client.

Moreover, everything is so easy to install with those cute wizards, and installing sessions are ready within minutes.

Until… well, until I spend enough time online, using email, starting to receive viruses, worms and other creatures that do bad things to computers. If you ever had to do one of the following when using Outlook or Outlook Express:

try very hard not to click on a message subject that looked suspicious; anyway, not without using a small trick (that used to work for me): pressing Shift, selecting the suspicious messages and then hitting Del,

try hard not to select some very good and very important messages together with the suspicious ones,

accept phone calls from extremely upset clients accusing you of infecting their computers with God knows what worm (personally got in trouble with BugBear),

working on an extremely low system because an efficient AV is doing its job scanning, updating, warning, locking etc.

delete all your Outlook contacts in order not to become infectious for friends and clients in case your computer somehow got infected,

…then you know what it’s like. Both Outlook and Outlook Express, while different applications, with no related history, have security as their weakest link. And that’s why some people switch to other email clients that are said to be more secure.

It is true that most worms are today Outlook dedicated because Outlook has both more users and more security holes. It is also true that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates set security as a top priority back on 17th January 2002 (it’s been almost two years by now). While I don’t mean to ban Outlook or Outlook Express, I’d like to choose the best for me, and the best doesn’t seem one of the fore mentioned, at the moment.
