Prophetic Nerds

Writen by Jesse Somer

I am an Internet creative writer and journalist and yet knowledge of the technical side of computers still eludes me. As I work with tech-heads I’ve always had a feeling that they were a different breed of people, with their strange language of numbers and abbreviated terminology. I’ve also had the egotistical belief that because they are always sitting at their computers, that somehow they were missing out on life, as opposed to people like me who try to spend as much time in fresh air as possible. Well, I had a wake up call today when I asked a few of my colleagues about the changing world of communication, television, film, and advertising that has begun to evolve at an alarming rate since the advent of the Internet.

First of all, after a short discussion I realized these people are just like me, they do all the things I do in their spare time. Secondly, I came to understand that a lot of these so-called ‘nerds’ are actually at the forefront of this revolution of technology and ideas that are changing our world for the better. Their well-kept secret is this: As they are the people designing these technologies that harness the power of the human imagination, they are actually prophets who can see into the future. I’m not saying that they are gurus who have mastered all aspects of life, on the contrary, I still believe that most of contemporary society still needs to focus much more time and attention on internal growth and understanding of our emotions and thought processes. However, as the tech-head jobs are usually based around ideas about how to make the world function better, they are miles ahead when it comes to knowing about which systems are going to implemented in the future.

Take communication for example. When the telephone was first invented by Alexander Graham Bell a lot of people questioned the worth of being able to speak to someone that they couldn’t see face-to-face. Of course after the benefits were discovered, the whole paradigm of communication drastically changed. Everyone now felt that it was ‘necessary’ to have a telephone. Many, many years later came satellites and with them the ability to talk to people on the other side of the world. Recently we’ve had huge cables constructed of optical fiber laid along the ocean floor, and with them came light-speed telephone and Internet connections. Well, the future of communication is now on the verge of a new revolution in paradigm as voice-over-Internet communication comes into existence and evolves.

A good example of this technology in its early stages can be found at http://www.skype.com/. Skype is a company whose service of computer-to-computer and even computer-to-phone communication has already had around 115 million downloads off the Internet. The reason that it is so popular now is that compared to a normal landline phone call, it is super cheap! A few of my friends and colleagues use it regularly so I’ll tell you how it works.

In the case of computer-to-computer voice communication, each person needs either a headset with built-in microphone and headphones, or a combination of microphone and computer speakers/headphones. At this stage you both also need a Broadband Internet connection, but let me tell you, until the big telephone and Internet corporations put a block on the current system (some US companies already have), you can now talk to people on the other side of the world for relatively free! The only cost seen is where the amount of time you speak is subtracted from your allowable download limit. Talking to someone for an hour on the other side of the globe hardly takes any download usage and as the Internet is the medium, the ‘phone call’ is actually better quality than a landline but with equal speed so there’s no time delay of speaker to listener like in the days of satellites.

The computer-to-phone service does have a fee but it still costs less than the rates on a normal telephone, although my friend says that the quality isn’t as good as the other Skype method yet. What does this mean for future communication in our world? It means eventually telephone companies will probably have to become Internet communication providers, and by that stage they will probably raise prices, as they will be losing so much of the revenue that they make now from overcharging on telephone services. It’s kind of like the situation we have with fossil fuels versus environmentally friendly energy production. Even though the technology exists, the oil companies aren’t going to bring it out until they’ve made every cent they can from the old technology.

However, as the Internet is a new medium where the general public has much more power and freedom from corporation and government constraints, this new technology has a much better chance of being implemented into our society straight away. 115 million downloads of Skype alone means that if the phone companies try and block this sort of communication completely, people probably won’t stand for it. This is also an important fact as it means that Internet nerds have a much better chance of bringing their ideas to reality, compared with nerds in other areas of human progress that are controlled more by big money-makers. As for now, if I were you I’d get onto Skype or another Internet voice communication provider and save your hard earned cash for as long as you can.

Don’t Let Headphone and Charge Cords Control Your Life

Writen by P. Holstein

What do you do with your iPod’s earbuds when you’re not using them? Wind them around something in hopes that they won’t get tangled?

What do you do with your cell phone’s sync cord? Stuff it into a carry-on pocket, hoping it won’t get knotted around your hairbrush?

And what do you do with your laptop’s plug? Stick it into your laptop case, knowing it will ultimately get caught on every other gizmo in there?

Of course, tangled, knotted and caught up in everything else is exactly how they end up, and you have to waste many minutes trying to de-tangle everythingif you even can. If this sounds familiar, we have found a few solutions (available at Cableorganizer.com), to help you make sense of your favorite toys’ add-ons.

The folks who created the earPod (left) say that it was created by iPod users for iPod users. Well, I’m here to tell you that anyone who uses earbud-style headphones for any portable player will love the earPod. Closed, the earPod looks like a white plastic spool; however, one side of the spool rotates open to expose a compartment big enough to hold your earbuds.

You simply wrap your earbud cable around the earPod, snake the bodies of the earbuds into the center compartment, and then close the case. Your earbuds are neatly stored for travel. (Full disclosure: an earPod currently resides in my gym bag, taking care of my prized Etymotic 6i Isolator headphones, which have been tangle-free since purchasing the earPod.)

Another stylish answer, the Cableyoyo,(right) is also a must-have for any gadgets and gizmos junkie. Recently dubbed “the paperclip of the new millennium,” Cableyoyo offers true functional practicality as well as a minimal yet aesthetically balanced form, showing promise as the next hot desk accessory mainstay for the 21st century.

Cableyoyo efficiently stores up to 6 feet of cord on a single, flat plane, keeping wires manageable and out of the way. It is intended for stationary as well as mobile use as it can be mounted to any fixed location and is extremely light and compact for travel. Cableyoyo can easily hide behind desks, monitors, or file cabinets, but the sleek, streamlined design calls for placement in plain sight.

Charge cords, however, aren’t so dainty that they would necessarily fit neatly into the earPod or Cableyoyo. For this, there’s the effective and colorful Cable Turtle (left and below right). Available in nine colors for the fashion conscious crowd, and two sizes3

Barcode Label-design Software

Writen by Eddie Tobey

Barcode label-design software is a complete solution to all your designing needs for barcode labels. A barcode label is the common way to identify a product or asset. The software designs a pattern of black lines of different thicknesses, each unique from the other. Most design software is compatible for barcode label printing applications.

Label-design software first generates a template, which is the actual format of a barcode label. Once the template is created, it is printed on a specialized paper with an adhesive surface using a printer. All barcode label-design software packages are easy to use. No programming is needed by the user.

Starting with thousands of predefined label stocks, each package guides you through label design with intuitive menus and help features. You can create labels with constant data, serial numbers, and dynamic data from text files. It is also possible to write notes that do not print and keep them in the scratch area (off of the label). Some packages allow you to link fields and enter dynamic information from the keyboard at print time.

Barcode label design software is commonly classified into two types: stand-alone menu-driven programs and barcode font programs. The menu-driven programs come with scalable fonts, graphic image import, all popular barcodes, data file import, and easy custom operator interface. A font-based program can select barcode fonts from any word processing program (such as Word, Excel, PageMaker, etc.), independent of operating systems.

Most barcode label-design software packages available on the market are easy; they enable you to integrate barcode label designing into your business processes. Choosing which one is right for you depends on how comprehensive you want to get. It is always better to use a trial version before you select your barcode label design software solution. A lot of web sites provide barcode label design software downloads.

Headsets

Writen by Josh Riverside

Headsets or headphones are actually miniature speaker systems. They are stereo hearing systems that are wearable, thus providing mobility to the user. Traditional headsets were bulky and large with two speakers for both the ears encased in padded ovular ear cups. These ear cups were attached to a headband in the shape of an arch that went over the head. Each of these ear cups had a signal wire joined down together as a single wire, which was connected to the audio player/ radio through a headphone jack.

Today’s headphones are technological wonders-extremely lightweight with no irritating cords, almost negligible in appearance, with built in savoir-faire like noise canceling, sound quality, durability and comfort. These headsets are no longer meant for just listening to music or for professions like aviation or the military. Headsets today are making even activities like video conferencing, computer gaming, talking on the cell phone in noisy environments, and other activities extremely comfortable. Besides, these headsets also provide extreme flexibility to the user to do other things simultaneously like walking or even skating or skiing. Some headsets are so advanced that they cancel out external noise discriminately by eliminating only the undesirable noises. These are highly useful for recording studios and other musical environments.

Modern headsets also contain microphones for headsets that are meant for telephone or computer use. These are extremely useful in offices like contact centers where the main activity is to speak into a phone for hours. They enable hands-free operation and thus prevent stress on the neck, shoulder and hands.

There are different kinds of headsets available depending on the style (over-the head/ on-the-ear/in-the-ear/ behind-the-ear/ convertible), the options available (standard/voice tube/ noise canceling), the solution type (telephone use/mobile use/ headset adapter/ headset accessory), the mobility allowed (wireless/corded), the kind of ear piece (monaural/binaural), the kind of phone/computer connection to be used with the headset (Bluetooth, USB, 3.5mm/ Analog), the compatibility (to music), the kind of computer usage (VoIP, Computer Gaming), the range of bass/treble, the power of the speakers etc. Manufacturers also provide the support of online specialists to help you purchase the best headset, including discounts and warranties.

When buying a headset ask yourself the following: is it comfortable? Does it stay securely in place for long hours? Is the microphone flexible and unobtrusive? Is the cord long enough for easy movement? Are the volume and other controls easily accessible? Is the sound quality on both the lines clear?

The leading manufacturers of headsets are Plantronics, GN Netcom, Headsets.com, Sennheiser, Jabra, and Sony. Headsets are also very inexpensive, depending on the kind of model. A good pair of headphones costs around $10 though an extremely advanced model with all the works may be priced at $150-$200 or higher. The Internet is a good source for locating the ideal headset. There are several web sites that provide comprehensive information about the wide range of headsets available in the market today.

The Benefits of the Blu-ray Disc

Writen by Josh Biggs

This article will give you an overview of the benefits that the next-gen blu-ray format will offer over conventional formats such as DVD.
The blu-ray format is going to push forward the limits of current media substantially which allow you to enjoy a host of great benefits which include:

  • Improved Capacity,
  • High-Definition Video,
  • Enhanced Interactivity,
  • Enhanced Copy Protection, and
  • Being Future Proof.

The most obvious benefit is the larger capacity. With 25gb/50gb to use, movie and game studios will be able to offer much more in terms of extra features and longer gameplay. Also many new DVD titles require 2 discs for added features whereas only one will be needed for blu-ray which will lower the prices for you.

High-Definition (HD) video playback is perhaps the most useful aspect of the next-gen formats. As HD becomes more mainstream (Sky launched there HD offering recently and more households are buying HD ready TV’s) the ability for disc formats to support it is imperative. Blu-ray offers space for 2hrs/4hrs respectively of HD video (different encodings will allow more and less) with space for interactive features still available.

The enhanced interactivity features are another step forward compared to DVD. By incorporating the java platform (called BD-J), blu-ray players can have dynamically changing interactive menu’s that can be updated via an internet connection built into the player. These updates can include extra subtitles tracks and promotional features not available at purchase. This could effectively eliminate the ’special editions’ studios tend to use as users could simply download all the extra features they wanted though its not clear if this will be free.

The enhanced copy protection is one aspect you won’t notice as much but is very important. Blu-ray utilizes a variety of copy protection methods such as Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Advanced Access Content System (AACS). The DRM method used on Blu-ray is called BD+ which creates dynamically changing keys to protect the discs. This means that if a key is cracked only a select portion of the discs are compromised. The AACS can effectively disable players which are deemed ‘bad’. i.e. if copied discs are used frequently, the AACS could disable the player for the user and stop it working even if bought by someone else. The final copy protection which may affect you is the Mandatory Managed Copy System (MMCS) which limits users to a set number of copies of discs by making the user register the ‘right’ to copy the disc.

Finally the blu-ray disc has been designed to be future proof. This means that by buying all the new equipment needed, you will not need an upgrade in the near future (5 yrs) as these next-gen formats evolve. Also TDK has announced work on a 200gb blu-ray disc (6 x 33gb layers) which will future proof the format even more.

This is just an overview of the benefits that blu-ray offers. There are many smaller improvements but the benefits listed above are the ones that you are most likely going to affect you.

Things You Need To Know About Adaware Download

Writen by Paul I Etkin

The only problem with free adaware download software is that it does not protect your computer. Although it will delete spyware which has effected it, it will not stop the infection from occurring in the first place. To do that, you need to buy the adaware professional version, which is quite cheap, but still not free like the other one. If you do a lot of web surfing, it might be a worthy investment, but for my needs, the free adaware download software does the job quite well. I just need to remember to run a quick scan every couple of days, and it will catch any spyware, web diverters, malware, and other common junk slowing down your computer.

I got an adaware download when I noticed that my computer was running much slower than it should. Before I downloaded adaware, I was getting a ridiculous amount of pop-up ads as well, and my web-browser would crash every few minutes. I couldn’t understand what was going on. Was something wrong with my hard drive, I wondered? Was this a windows problem? Once I found out that a free adaware download was what I needed, my life quickly got much easier.

The adaware download went easily and smoothly. There were mirror sites all over the country, so it was no trouble to find an adaware download site close enough to provide a quick response. And installing the adaware download software was equally simple. Just click on it, and it runs itself! And not only was the adaware software free, but it was free with professional level service. Every week or so, there is a new adaware download update made to defend against the latest spyware.

Of course, along with an adaware download, you really need to an anti-virus program to fully protect your computer. An adaware download will go part of the way to protecting it from malware, but that stuff is merely annoying. Although spyware can slow down your computer, unless you are very unlucky it will seldom do anything to really mess it up. There are some versions which can be used to hack into your computer, but these are best caught by the anti-virus anyway. An anti-virus program can protect your computer from the really malicious bugs, in the same way that an anti-spyware program can protect it from the stuff which is merely annoying.

Computer Consulting: The Initial Consultation

Writen by Joshua Feinberg

You have to think of the sales process as more of like a pre-sales consultation and with an emphasis on consultation. You really want to convey your professionalism and stand out from the other computer consulting “professionals” out there who want to act like used car salespeople.

In this article, you’ll learn that this can be done by taking a sincere interest in your prospect’s business, taking a sincere interest in their problems, and getting a grasp on those problems so you can figure out if you have a solution for them within your computer consulting business.

Have You Dug Up Any Dirt?

There may be cases where you find some dirt on them that makes you not want to do business with them. The computer consulting sales call is really a two-way interview process. If you see some weird, bizarre stuff going on or there’s some weird, bizarre stuff in background and in the news about this prospect, you may not want their business. As strange as it sounds, you may want to turn down their business, but again, this is the importance of doing your homework ahead of time and being prepared for your initial consultation.

Realize Time is Money

You’ll probably need to take a half hour to an hour to put together a little introductory packet of things to give them. You’re going to spend a half hour to an hour driving over there. Your consultation will very rarely start on time or finish on time. So by the time you get done, even if you’re super-efficient, usually two or three hours has been spent.

If you take your hourly billing rate that you’re billing out for computer consulting service calls, let’s say you’re billing at $75 an hour for computer consulting, that means you invested $225 in time before gas and mileage and parking and tolls. Before you do that, make sure your computer consulting prospect is a good fit. One of the best ways you can do that is by qualifying them a little better. Doing your homework goes a long way towards this end.

VPN Software

Writen by Kent Pinkerton

VPN is a private communications network, which is used within a company, or by many different companies or organizations, for communicating over a public network. VPN software is provides a connection between a user’s computing device and a host VPN server. This software allows accessing Internet and extranet sources that are restricted to certain IP addresses. VPN Software is also sometimes called a Gateway.

VPN Management cannot be complete without a thorough investigation into the software issues. VPN software relieves the users from having to carry a token around. The software tokens have other advantages too. They are considerably cheaper. They can be mass deployed. They are also easier to develop the hardware. Only Web links are needed for multiple people to work on the development of the software. It can be reproduced using provisioning software. VPN Software plays a vital role in the financial position of a company. The software needs to be periodically updated. Since encryption is performed in the software, network throughput will be affected, based on the size of the processor. The software tokens are not as user friendly as the hardware ones. In the software token, when the user inputs his PIN, the token presents the user with a pass code. The user has to copy and paste this pass code from the token to the application he’s accessing

A few things need to be done to keep the software updated. Updates and patches to the VPN software, client software and server software must be kept track of. The update must be pushed out of reach of a remote user. Security of the VPN should be maintained. A plan of action must be ready incase a server’s security is ever compromised. The VPN software offers the privacy needed for communicating while using a public network and between servers behind the firewall. Network protection policies are enforced regardless of where the remote user is located, or how the user is accessing the server — by dial-in, local network or Internet access.

Discount Large Format Scanners

Writen by Damian Sofsian

Large format scanners are used in a lot of places today. Many of them have become as common as the small format scanner as their use and applicability continues to increase by the day. Besides, there are many companies now that make large format scanners. This means that the cost of large format scanners has come down considerably. Interestingly, the features and the applications of the scanners have increased as costs have gone down.

It would not be wrong to say that it has become considerably easier to find huge discounts on large format scanners. However, with so many places to choose from?ranging from a local store, to wholesalers, to even the Internet?it may not be easy for someone to find the cheapest possible option. Keeping a few things in mind will certainly make the task much simpler.

One can surely find a cheap large format scanner directly from the manufacturer. However, the problem is that most of them do not encourage single purchases. So, if you are looking for just one scanner, a manufacturer may not be able to help you. However, it must be noted that a lot of manufacturers do encourage sales of their scanners online which means that if you visit their website, you are bound to find that they are selling single pieces as well. Most of these websites have addresses of wholesalers and distributors who do not hesitate to offer good discounts on large format scanners because of the cut throat competition across the nation.

The second place where one can find a significant discount on large format scanners is the wholesaler. These wholesalers operate in mainly two modes. One is that they do not have a brick and mortar store meaning that they sell their scanners only online and will be able to give more discounts than anyone. The second type is the local wholesaler who has a store but sells the scanners at a discount.

One can also find large format scanners on shopping sites like E-bay. One can easily manage to find a good discount on large format scanners here as well. However, must always remember that more important than the cost is the usability feature. One should first consider his or her needs and only then go in for a large format scanner.

Microsoft Great Plains: carpet, textile, fabric, felt distributor – implementation overview

Writen by Andrew Karasev

In this small article we will show you the possible way of deploying Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains for the market niche of large, mid-size and small reselling and distribution business in carpeting and floor covering, textile & fabric. We will not be talking about fabric production, but rather cutting for the end-user or small retailer. Microsoft Great Plains itself in our case should be considered as a platform for light customization and modification. We’ll describe industry requirements and the way them to be implemented in Great Plains

Variable Length Rolls. Usually, when you place and order through your supplier – there is no way to know exact length of the roll or bolt. It might have 75 yards or 80 yards – you typically know the average length, say 77 yards and this is why you know what to expect in yards if you purchase 10 bolts

Inventory in Yards. When you receive the roll – you need to place it into inventory in exact yards. Typical method is to assign lot number to the bolt and then associate the exact initial length in yards with this unique lot number. This is Great Plains Dexterity customization, which provides parallel unit of measure, associated with the lot number

Light Assembly. Bill of Materials would be probably too complex for cutting the fabric. This is why we suggest to deploy automatic inventory decrease and increase adjustments – you decrease number of yards in the roll and increase your finished good in the number of units assembled

Meter / Yard challenge. If you purchase from the supplier in China, Mexico, South East Asia or Europe – they measure their rolls in meters, not yards – so you need to implement automatic unit of measure translation and conversion. You resolve this on the level of your EDI – electronic document interchange

Cut-beds tracking to original roll. If you are assembling/cutting something like billiard table beds – you would like them to be tracked to the original roll in the case of customer complaint. This means that you will have to assign the same or modified lot number to the cut-bed

Inventory Count. You need to track what is the current length of the bolt/roll. This is realized via custom Dexterity table, having Item Number, Lot Number, Initial Length in Yards, Current Length in Yards

Customization Tools: Great Plains Dexterity – this is Great Plains Dynamics programming language and development environment; Modifier with VBA – will allow your modify Great Plains forms and attach VBA scripts to your custom buttons; SQL scripts and stored procedures – low level database programming, excellent for the professional with profound GP tables structure and data flow knowledge.

Good luck with implementation, customization and integration and if you have issues or concerns – we are here to help!
