PC Hardware: How Ego Can Cost Your Clients

Writen by Joshua Feinberg

Your clients might be tempted to outfit their top managers and producers with the latest and greatest PC hardware. After all, a CFO or senior account manager has a tremendous amount riding on his or her daily performance and productivity. But they need to consider better ways to spend their money.

What Does Your Client Really Need?

Look carefully at clients’ software application requirements before you allow their “emotional” needs to drive tech PC hardware purchases. If a client’s CFO spends most of a typical day crunching numbers in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and communicating via e-mail in Microsoft Outlook, he or she really has only very basic PC hardware requirements.

Would Their Money Be Spent Better Elsewhere?

As virtual CIO to this client, you may find at least a dozen financial software-related projects you could work on for this CFO that would bring greater bottom-line results than an ego-driven PC hardware purchase.

These consulting projects will be infinitely more profitable to your consulting firm than the slim profit margin on a high-end, commodity-like desktop PC hardware purchase.

What about Notebook PCs?

Also help your clients keep their egos in check with notebook purchases. Your clients can get some really useful multimedia features in high-end notebooks in the $4,000 to $5,000 price range.

But if the CEO of one of your main clients merely wants to access e-mail remotely, you easily could equip him or her with a reliable, high-performance, brand-name notebook for one-third to one-half of that price.

Use Your Knowledge To Help Your Clients

As your clients’ virtual CIO and technology visionary, you have an awesome responsibility. Don’t allow clients’ objective judgments and technology budgets to get seduced by superfluous bells and whistles – especially when these bells and whistles take away from technology spending that can have a much greater impact than PC hardware purchases.

When in doubt, ask yourself this basic question:

“If my client took the $5,000 that was about to be spent on the “Rolls Royce” of notebooks and reallocated the amount toward computer consulting services, what kind of an impact on their business could my firm make with a $5,000 budget for a consulting project?”

How to Speed Up your Network Performance in Windows XP – For Real

Writen by Mike Manchuk

There are so many programs that will tweak your TCP/IP settings. The truth is changing your MTU or time to live (TTL) settings will only do so much. Windows XP is already set for broadband connections so there is really not much to do.. Most of the time regular use, installing programs and updating your computer will slow down your computer. In this tutorial we will show you how to maintain a better performing computer for broadband use.

Step 1: Increase DNS Cache

When you connect to the internet the www.whatever.com is translated into a number that looks like 192.222.12.4. These translations are stored in your DNS cache. With the translations of web addresses cached your computer does not have to look to the web as much for information so this will speed up your internet browsing. This little how to will show you how to increase your DNS cache for Windows XP.

Go to the start menu and select run. In the run dialog box type regedit and click on OK. Once in the registry editor go to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServices
DnscacheParameters. Add the following D-words and values:
“CacheHashTableBucketSize” dword: “00000001″
“CacheHashTableSize” dword: “00000180″
“MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit” dword: “0000fa00″
“MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit” dword: “0000012d”
Once complete close the registry editor and restart your computer. Thats it.

Step 2: Increase the number of allowed TCP/IP connections. Microsoft decided to release service pack 2 for Windows XP as a major security update. With all of the bad press they have been getting with Windows XP security issues it wasn’t a bad idea. One of the things Microsoft had decided to do was limit the number of TCP/IP connections allowed at one time to ten. We would show you how to manually edit your limit of connections in Windows XP but we will visit that another time and give you a direct link to the utility that does it all for ya. Remember that this is just for Windows XP service pack 2.

Here is the link: http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads

Step 3: Update Your Network Card Drivers.

It is always good to keep windows up to date. In the case of drivers it is best to go with what works. try to update your driver for better performance. If it does not work as well just roll back the driver. How do you do that? In Windows XP you have the ability to roll back your drivers on demand to an older working one. To access the rollback driver feature just right-click on my computer and go to properties. In the properties go to the hardware tab and click on the device manager button. Right-click on the piece of hardware you wish to roll back the driver for and go to properties. Click on the driver tab and click on the roll back driver button.. A wizard will pop up and just follow the steps in the wizard and you will be set.

Step 4: Keep a tidy ship.

The less your computer has to keep track of the less time it will take to browse your network or the internet. Windows already takes steps to clean things up for you but this may not be to the extent that you may like. Here are a few steps to take to clean up your computer so your network or internet browsing will be running smooth.

First make sure you are only running what you need. If you go to My Computer and click on My Network Places. In My Network Places click on the view network connections. Right-click on a local area connection and go to properties. In the properties you will see the network components that you have installed. The components I would keep is client for Microsoft networks, file and printer sharing, and internet protocol (TCP/IP). I would recommend checking with your internet service provider and see what is really needed to connect to the internet. To remove the ones that you don’t want just remove the check marks and click on OK.

Secondly it is always good to clear your temporary internet files. You can do this by going into Internet Explorer. Once in Internet Explorer go to the tools menu and internet options. Once in the Internet Options click on the delete files button. If you have a lot of files to delete your computer may act like it is frozen for a bit but once done just click on OK and exit Internet Explorer.

Last but not least it is good to flush your DNS cache from time to time. I know we showed you earlier how to expand your DNS cache size so why would you want to delete it? If there are entries in the DNS cache that your computer does not use it is taking the time to search through the unneeded stuff to the needed entries. To flush your DNS you go to the start menu and then nun. In the run command type in “cmd” and click on OK. This will open a dos prompt. In the dos prompt type in “ipconfig /flushdns” and press enter. That’s it.

Step 5: Clean and Defrayment your Hard Drive.

When you make a request for a file on your network or the internet your computer has to write the file to your hard drive. If you have a slower preforming hard drive your network performance will suffer. The best way to keep your hard drive in shape is to Clean and defrayment your hard drive regularly. Here is how it is done. Go to my computer. Right-click on your C drive and select properties. In the properties click on the tools tab. Click on the defragment button. To clean up your hard drive go to the start menu and in the accessories under the programs folder you will find the System Tools. In the system tools click on disk clean up.

Barcoding for Microsoft Dynamics GP/Great Plains – Customization Review

Writen by Andrew Karasev

As we see ERP system are implemented in the companies, where it must be tightly integrated with existing or legacy system, automate warehousing, shipping & receiving operations, bar code scanners (Symbol wireless and stand alone) inventory order fulfillment. One of the directions is so-called supply chain management implementation (Radio Beacon, for example), integrated with Microsoft Great Plains. Another solution, which should be cheaper and fit for mid-size warehousing operations – use third party custom modules for Microsoft Dynamics GP as well as have customization partner to tune custom piece for your unique warehousing operations. In this small article we will give you an overview of light barcoding functionality, available for Great Plains.

Sales Order Processing (SOP) custom logic. Barcode scanning is in general similar to entering characters from the keyboard itself, and it is natural to improve SOP logic to automate such processes as order fulfillment or shipping. In this case you should be able to invoice more than it was ordered, for instance. Simple Great Plains prompt screen should just let you decide if you would like to overship or not.

Barcode – Item number. You should probably be able to have these two coexist in parallel – we suggest the association to be stored in custom table.

Serial/Lot Number. We often see the need to associate lot number with the specific large unit of measure, like roll (of cloth/fabric), having slightly variable number of yards or meters each new time (having new lot number or serial number). The variable length must be associated with the lot number in parallel with standard unit of measure logic

Technology. The customization technology for Microsoft Dynamics GP is still the same as it was 5-10 years ago – Microsoft Dexterity or former Great Plains Dexterity. Customization exists in the form of chunk (file with .CNK extension), which is integrated with Great Plains workstation the first time you launch the application and then becomes custom dictionary file (DYNAMICS.DIC is core functionality, CUSTOM.DIC is your customization dictionary for example). Dexterity uses scanscript coding and has Microsoft Dexterity IDE. In some cases you can extend Dexterity customization with SQL stored procedures, VBA scripting with Microsoft Great Plains Modifier (DYNAMICS.VBA), but the Dexterity is still preferable, if we are talking about standard Great Plains client application. If you plan to deploy web interface, you should consider newer technologies, such as eConnect.

SQL Tables. In the case of SOP you deal with SOP10100 – Sales Document Header, SOP10200 – Sales Document Lines, plus you need to read IV00101 – Inventory Item Master and IV00102 – Item QTY Master tables

Microsoft RMS Integration. If you sell on the retail level and would like the transactions to be consolidated into Great Plains – you need Microsoft Dynamics GP – MS RMS Integration module. In our case we have it for AR/SOP/POP level, then you post transactions in Great Plains and have them come through the whole way up to GL

saving on cost of inks and cartridges

Saving On Cost Of Inks And Cartridges

Writen by Florie Lyn Masarate

There was a news report about a woman filing a lawsuit against a certain HP printer manufacturer because she said that the inks are programmed to expire on a certain date, whether the cartridges are empty or not. HP representative counters that the reason is because the inks are degrading over time and thus causes the expiration.

It is possible that the manufacturer of these inks are actually using some expertise to keep the profits up. With modern tools, who knows what these people are capable of? If these things are all true, saving costs on inks can be a challenge for the people especially those who do not have any knowledge about what profit makers are doing to their advantage.

How do they save ink and ink costs?

People who brought printers tend to buy the ink cartridges from the same manufacturers of these printers also. There are lots of independent sellers having selling the same kind of cartridges that works as well. Cheaper too. It does not make any difference where you buy the cartridges from as long as it works the same way and saves you more money.

Poorly made cartridges can result in poor quality prints and can even damage your printers. Checking about the ones you will use by asking the opinions of the experts would do the trick. Another option is the use of refillable inks. They can be a lot cheaper but also has the tendency for leaks as a downside. Fort hose who does not want to take the risk and regretting it in the end, the best way is to be careful and use highly recommended cartridges.

Sticking to black ink. Print in color when it is absolutely necessary, but if not, just use black ink. As you may already know, colored inks are much more expensive and some printing does not exactly require using them. For example, when printing something from the internet, do you have to use colors?

Buy in bulks. If a lot of printing is require and expected, you may want to try and buy inks in quantity. A lot of great deals are given for those who are buying more at once than those who buy a little every once in awhile.

Check the yield. Knowing the capacity of the cartridges you will be using is being prepared and ready beforehand. This will save you the trouble of being unprepared when the time for the inks to expire comes.

Printer inks can surely take a lot of money out of your pocket if you do not know some means of conserving them and making the most of what you have. The thing is, printers, inks and cartridges will really have problems in time. What you are doing is just prolonging what is expected. Better than nothing at all.

Network Support Contracts Can Provide Personal Help

Writen by Joshua Feinberg

Network support contracts are most commonly provided in the workplace to help maximize the efficiency of daily operations and also help professionals best keep their technology up and running. But students and others not using laptops for business purposes also need to be assured that their networking capabilities are insured. For these people, it may only take a few simple steps to get the peace of mind of a network support contract.

Keep Computers Running Under All Circumstances

A well-plotted and stable network will keep you connected at all times. The purpose of network support contracts is to keep your network running all the time, uninterrupted. If you have a reliable network infrastructure, you will be able to get to files you left at work off-site, any day and at any time. Using professional consultants as part of network support contracts allows companies to give employees access from anywhere. Having these consultants accessible to not only implement but also monitor these networking capabilities will help promote business growth and peace of mind.

Personal Networks

People using their computers at home often want to set up personalized networking options, but find themselves feeling alone sometimes when it comes to the network support contracts they find to help them. No matter how skilled you are at navigating the process of not only setting up but maintaining these at-home networks, you have probably found yourself in need of the extra support provided by a high quality network support contract.

Looking For Online Support

Those in academic and government arenas will typically get free network support contracts that help them connect to offices across the campus or between departments. Other people trying to set up networking capabilities can do speedy searches for network support contracts that will help them find Internet resources to trouble shoot when they need immediate or simple help. Online support contracts can provide a wonderful way to get personalized help particularly when balanced with in-person guidance.

Choosing Manufacturing Software Effectively

Writen by Leon Chaddock

Purchasing manufacturing software does not have to be difficult. It can actually be rather simple to do if you know what you are looking for. There are a large variety of options available to serve various needs in this type of software. There are also a large range of prices. What you choose is completely up to you, but having high quality is well worth the extra costs. Here are some things to consider about your choice in manufacturing software:

Begin by realizing that you should take a look at several software choices before making a choice. While the first one you see may be a great one to choose as it fills your needs, something down the road is likely to be better in someway. It takes only minutes to research this information on the web and the gain is potentially large.

When considering manufacturing software, look at what the product offers. Some will help you with the design of the element and that is it. Others will walk you through the quoting, the proposals, the designing and the implementation. They will focus on either one or two functions or they will take you through the whole thing.

Do they help you with your accounting needs as well? Many do and this is an excellent option as it can easily help with accounts payable, commissions and many more aspects.

You will want to find the right sized product as well. Some are meant for small to medium size organizations while others for much larger. Also, consider your needs for the type of manufacturing as there will be many differences here too.

Yes, There Really is Useful Wedding Planning Software

Writen by Richard Keir

Wedding planning isn’t an easy task. A wedding is an incredibly complicated undertaking – unless you plan to elope or just go downtown to the justice of the peace. For a relatively large, traditional wedding there are many activities and events that you’ll need to track to keep the wedding on schedule.

Now there are people who actually choose to become experts in wedding planning. That’s what they do – day after day. While hiring someone to help you with your wedding can be the perfect solution, it’s not always feasible. A professional wedding planner may charge as much as 10% of the cost of the wedding. For many couples this extra charge is quite sufficient for them to take over their wedding planning themselves. Now there is plenty of software available that can help make this decision a smart one.

In looking at wedding planning software, one feature you definitely want is a calendar. Remember that this is not just a function for keeping track of dates. Your planning software should allow you to set notifications for important events. Wedding planning software usually uses E-mail reminders. And if your mobile telephone has a text-messaging feature, the ability to receive e-mail reminders on your cell phone is a great benefit.

Since wedding planning includes a significant number of tasks, being able to coordinate these tasks is essential in a wedding planning software program. After sending out your wedding invitations, you should be able to easily track who has responded and who hasn’t.

Also your tasks aren’t limited to your wedding ceremony. There are also specific tasks that are associated with the wedding reception which you also must track. Since a seating plan is the norm for a wedding reception, your wedding planning software should help you track the seating arrangements. Also think about gifts. No doubt, you’ll receive many gifts from friends and family. Tracking those gifts so you can send a thank you card is a very handy feature.

Along with scheduling and tracking, wedding planning involves money and budgeting. You really don’t need anything as complicated as QuickBooks or PeachTree, but you do want to be able to monitor your spending so that you don’t end up broke before the ceremony.

Another advantage of some wedding planning software is that it allows you to create custom stationary to use for your wedding. This can be a useful overall plus because it can save you a bundle of money. A software program with this feature will usually contain templates that you can use as a guide for creating invitations and any other stationary you might need for your wedding.

The best way to look for wedding planning software is to do a search on Google. You’ll find a variety of options from free online services to low priced online to dedicated software that runs on your PC such as Smart Wedding. You must compare features carefully – free is not always best, so be careful and do some thinking about just what you need and just what you want to do with the software. No matter which wedding planning solution you choose, it’ll make your wedding a lot easier.

Computer Projector Rentals: A Guide

Writen by Marcus Peterson

Any meeting or conference requires a computer to handle inputs like data, graphics, video and audio. Computer as a multimedia application has properties comparable to standalone players for VCD or DVD. With the integration of IT and the Internet into the audio visual industry, computers have become an indispensable item of equipment. They are a common product line in the inventory of a/v rental companies.

To have a meeting with computer aided presentation of data, graphics and video, one needs to have a projector that is compatible with different makes of computers such as IBM and Mac. For instance, an iMAC computer has different requirements than other systems. The accessories that come with computer projectors are audio and video cables, speakers and screen.

The type of screen is decided by the number of members in the audience. If it is a small gathering, a 27″ monitor may be used. For large gatherings, a flat screen display or a plasma monitor with 50″ monitor may be used. If it is a notebook computer, the laptop must be activated to have the output to the projector. Depending on the number of the people, importance of brightness, contrast and resolution, an LCD projector would be a good fit for the occasion.

The important factors an event manager must consider before choosing the a/v system are the room size, lighting conditions, the inputs that will be displayed, the resolution and clarity of the visual images and screen size. Depending upon the requirements, the rental rate may vary from $300 to $500. Also, the rental companies provide value added services such as complete solutions to manage the event.

Computer projectors are used by corporate houses and universities for business presentations and seminars. They can be booked by phone or online. Most rental companies deliver the systems the previous day. The major manufacturers of computer projector systems are Hitachi, 3M, Compaq and Canon.

Microsoft Dynamics AX Axapta 4.0 Project Green Advancement Notes

Writen by Andrew Karasev

Microsoft Business Solutions owns and promotes several Microsoft Dynamics family ERP applications: Axapta, Solomon, Navision, Great Plains, Microsoft CRM. All of these inherit some legacy and have obligations to the existing clientele: Great Plains has large number of clients in USA, Canada and English speaking countries, Navision has strong legacy positions in Europe, Solomon has Project Accounting clientele base, Microsoft CRM or now Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 is probably the only one new product, which has good chances to become CRM front end for all the back-end MRP systems in Microsoft Dynamics family. We would like to share with you, potential or current Microsoft Dynamics AX customer some analytics on Microsoft Project Green, however these can not be considered MBS official point of view

Initial Phase of Project Green. Well, obviously things are changing, but we were given the impression of some so-called Microsoft Business Suites: Financials, Human Resources, Manufacturing, Project, Logistics, Supply Chain, etc. These suites will or should be built based on the best functionalities of MBS purchased ERPs: Great Plains, Axapta, Navision, Solomon

Microsoft Office & Sharepoint integration emphasize. The trend itself is great, plus it helps in-house Microsoft-oriented development team to take initiative over, however this trend might be the way to shift away the attention from Microsoft Business Suites integration and four ERPs merge conception

Axapta move. Initially, and this is again our opinion Axapta was purchased as the bundled addition to Navision, we should remind that Navision had excellent accounting/MRP market place in Europe: Germany, France, UK, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Spain, later on it was localized for Poland, Russia, etc. Axapta had advanced ERP functionality and was purchased by Navision Software (prior to its acquisition by Microsoft) to compete with major ERP brands: SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft, JDEdwards, etc.

Microsoft Dynamics AX or GP. This is probably the most confusing and compelling question in the USA and Canada. Well, lets look at the history. Great Plains Software had at the end of XX century its major competitor Solomon, to give you long story short – GPS mastered to acquire Solomon and made it auxiliary option, prior to be in turn acquired by stronger player – Microsoft Corporation. Now Axapta/Dynamics AX is localized for Europe, Latin America: Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador. Axapta supports Unicode (China, Japan, Burma), at the same time Microsoft Dynamics GP Great Plains is Great Plains Dexterity application. To give you some background facts – Dexterity was designed in the beginning of 1990th – MorphX/X++ is definitely a step forward, but we would like to wait more signals from MBS

Large, Mid-size and Small Business. We expect that Microsoft Dynamics is the answer for “all of us”. However the “answer” might depend on the world place and the legacy ERP scenario, which is understood and respected

XML Web Service. This seems to be the “troyan horse of Microsoft Business Portal and Microsoft .Net”. Even if we are in MS partners program to facilitate Microsoft Dynamics sales, we are not sure what is the future interrelations between AX and GP.
